The morning after the night before, we visited the ruined Dzong (fortress) at Drugyel in Paro from where many Tibetan invasions were repelled. It is about to be renovated which will be a huge project but it was an interest sight to see.

However, the main highlight of the day was the start of our 5 day Druk Path trek from Paro to Thimpu (the capital), supposedly with fantastic views of the mountains. The weather was still a bit miserable though not yet raining as we set off. We had a big entourage with horses and equipment - this is luxury camping!

Sadly though as we climbed higher through the forest the rain started to come harder and harder. Our spirits were still high though when we arrived at the camp as we expected it to be drier for the following days. We met up with two American guys who were experienced trekkers and an English couple who lived in Malaysia and we enjoyed a good meal and chat Drugyel Dzong

It was pretty cold too and we were really grateful for the hot water bottles we were given to take to bed! During the night the rain was torrential and we awoke to the whole campsite under water and little prospect of improvement. After some debate as to whether to continue we all decided to turn back and try another trek later on in the trip. This trip was costing too much to just walk in the rain!

Depressed, we headed off back down through the forest, stopping at a beautiful small monastery called Jele Dzong from where I'm sure the views would have been beautiful. Oh well.

All of our stuff was soaked so we dried off at the Gangtey Palace Hotel where we stayed before. After lunch and a short visit to the very good national museum we drove the 2 hours to Thimpu, which is big by Bhutanese standards but still everything is built in the traditional style.
