The next morning we visited the massive Tashilumpo monastery in Shigatse which is famous for selecting the Panchen Lama (second to the Dalai Lama) and has a number of old tombs and atmospheric halls and chapels.
Having sorted out our alien travel permits (to allow us to travel to the border) we then headed west on a long journey to Sakye, along a very bumpy road, which the jeep coped with easily. Sakye monastery was supposed to be one of the highlights of Tibet but we were pretty disappointed as it was very run down and looked like a Stalag prison. The town itself was also small and dirty and we didn't have much choice other than to stay in the main hotel in a shared 4 bed room. We stayed up late drinking beer and playing cards. Philipe had taught us a great came called Asshole!!
Jerry was the focus of attraction for one of the girls working at the hotel who even went so far as to call him "beautiful" - it must be the resemblance to Buddah (at least the haircut anyway!
