Ping Yao is an old city with intact city walls that encircle the old part. We reached there after a journey on a very old slow train in comparison to others we have travelled on in China.
We were met at the station by a tout who took us to a small but typical guest house of the area in a converted Qing dynasty building. The layout revolves around a central shaded courtyard with rooms off to the side. There were beautiful carvings and old painted doors. The layout facilitated lots of interaction with other guests.
Many of the buildings in Ping Yao have been restored to reflect their use in ancient times such as banks, pawn shops and the governor's residence as well as taoist temples.
You basically bought a pass which entitled you to enter 20 sites. This was interspersed with shopping and walking on top of the wall, which gave a great perspective of the narrow streets and alleyways.
