Turpan is another one of the famous cities on the old silk route. It's set in the middle of the desert, 80 metres below sea level and framed by the flaming mountains. It's also one of the hottest places in China and was 43C when we were there. Of course after India and Pakistan at 49C we handled it in our stride!!
Turpan was abundant in grapes and raisins for which it is famous. We quickly devoured 1/2 kilo of them, delicious. We resisted the pressure of a full day tour of mediocre sights and selected the ancient city of Jiaohe. It's set in the desert and was at its height in AD360 (1600 years old). It was pretty impressive built on top of a willow shaped cliff 2km long.
It's made out of mud but there are still recognisable streets and large buildings such as stupas and temples. Amazingly after 1600 years!! The evening's entertainment is an enjoyable evening of Uigur dancing (a cross between russian and pakistani). At the end we were all invited onto the stage and Jerry was selected to dance with the lead girl, having to pick up a flower with his teeth!! More thumbnails ...
