Due to the amount of snow still left on the 4000m+ plateau of Deosai, the roads were still closed and we had to change our ininerary. So instead we planned to do the 4500m Thalle La pass from Shigar to Khapulu, but even this one was in doubt due to snow. Nobody had crossed yet this year.
Hoping to hear news, we travelled by jeep to nearby Shigar, Shigri's home town, and former main town on the silk route from Kashmir. It is now a small but well kept farming community with abundant crops and fruit (apricots, mulberries and cherries).
The highlight though was the Shigar fort, the former Rajah's palace, but now a lovely hotel renovated over 6 years by the Aga Khan's organization. It was so nice to stay in a bit of luxury with good food that we paid to stay an extra night.
While in Shigar we were shown round the old wooden houses of the village, becoming the source of great attention from the local children who followed us like the pied piper shouting 'one pen'. The women and girls are much more noticable here than elsewhere and took great interest in talking to us. We also met the oldest man of the village for tea (he claimed to be 108).
Shigri introduced us to the Rajah who gave Jerry the honour of riding his horse to the start of the game, including throwing the ball in to start the match.
We also visited some lakes.
