17th to 23rd Aug 2007
Well a week has past since my last travelogue. The 17th - 19th August I was in Luang Prabang, mainly relaxing by the luxury hotel pool and walking around the town. I visited Wat xieng thong. There was the best bakerycafe called Joma. I was in there every day for lunch. At night, I met up with the 2 Irish girls (Orla and Yvonne) and a guy from Texas for dinner. On the 20th Aug (Monday) I had to get up early to catch the bus to Vientiane. The bus left at 0800, so I was up at 0600 to get packed up and checked out of the hotel before the tuk tuk arrived to take me to the bus station. The bus trip took 8 to 9 hours and arrived in Vientiane at around 1630. It was a bit of a scary ride - clinging to the edge of the mountain, twisting round hairpin bends as well. at least the scenery was fantastic - huge limestone karsts We stopped for lunch just outside Vang Vieng for half and hour then we were on our way again. At least it was a little flatter and straighter!!
The past 3 days, I have been touring around the city, visiting the few sites that are worth seeing; Wat Sisaket - the oldest in the city and Patuxay (think a smaller version of the Arc de triomphe). I bumped into the Australian couple that I met on the slow boat to Luang Prabang. They were travelling around Asia for a 3 months. Today I visited the Pha that Luang - the most important wat in the country, they even have a copy of it on their national seal. There is also a Joma restaurant here so guess what! - yes I was in there every day for lunch - the baking is first class. Definitely recommend this place if your are here.
Anyway, tomorrow I leave Laos behind, with a little sadnness, and head for Vietnam with a flight to Hanoi for six days, possibly taking in a cruise around the world heritage site of Halong Bay. I recommend anyone to come to Laos and experience it for themselves. Take care. Duncan More thumbnails ...
