13th to 16th August 2007
Got picked up from Chiang Mai hotel at 10am on the Monday morning and made a few more stops before we headed up to Chiang Khong (the border town with Laos). Half way along the journey a couple had to get off the minibus and transfer back to Chiang Mai as the girl was feeling unwell. We arrived in Chiang Khong around 5pm and got checked in to our guest house. Good view of the Mekong river but that's about it really - no running hot water or flushing loos. Went up to the restaurant and had dinner and a few beers. Got chatting to a guy from London and a couple of girls from the UK as well.
The following morning we headed for the border and the slow boat to Luang Prabang. The boat supposed to have left at 10.30am but didn't leave until around 12 noon. The start of the journey was OK and the views were magnificent. But after a while the wooden seats started to take their toll and I had to get up and move about. We arrived at Pakbeng for an overnight stay and checked in to the guesthouse - again no running hot water or flushing loos - I beginning to get the hang of this! Another early start and the boat was supposed to leave at 9am!! Didn't leave until around 11am. On this boat I managed to get a nice comfy seat (like a car seat). Seven hours later we arrived at Luang Prabang. Managed to get a tuk-tuk to the hotel that I pre-booked earlier. Absolute luxury!! Large balcony overlooking the pool. Later that night I went for a stroll down the main street of Luang Prabang and popped in to get something to eat. Bumped into the 2 Irish girls who were on the minibus from Chiang Mai. Didn't get back to the hotel until around midnight.
Today I have just been taken it easy, had breakfast at the hotel then wandered down to and around the town and visited the Royal Palace museum - very interesting. Anyway it's now around 3pm in the afternoon and I am know going back to the hotel to have a swim in the pool to cool down and maybe have a light refreshment or two as the sun is beating down on my heid!! Not a cloud in the sky, big difference from last night when we arrived - it was pissing it down!! That's all for now. Take care. Duncan More thumbnails ...
