Unawatuna is a bit more developed than Mirissa, it actually has ammenities, but this also means it attracts the package tourist....all of whom seem to be German. After the Tsunami all of the beachfromt buildings were destryoed, and instead of using this as an opportunity to do some sensible town planning, there has been a free for all, and the restaurants and hotels are now so far on the beach in paces the water washes under them. Not sensible people....where are the tourists going to sit?!

We stayed in a fabulous GH, well actually a private house with guest rooms, run by a German guy called Dieter and his Sri Lankan wife. More than anywhere else we really felt like we were at home, fabulous cooking, excellent company including a lady called Christiana and her daughter Joanna, nice room.

Over the last 4.5 months we have come to realise a very important travelling fact, how much you enjoy a place is greatly affected by how much you enjoy your guest house. And so we loved Singha Villa, and Unawatuna and stayed a record 6 days!

More diving, which we seem finally to have got the hang of. Duncan made a friend a big batfish who followed him for an hour, and kept coming right up to him to have a look, and we saw lobsters and huge Napolean Wrasse.

And lots of lounging on the beach and generally just relaxing.

New Years Eve we had a special buffet dinner at the guest house, which was utterly delicious, and then fatally some Arrack, which is distilled cocut juice or something....firewater anyway. Then off to the beach, and beacuse it was raining a bit of a lame NY pary, but ho hum, we made the best of it, drank vodka, danced like fools and crept back to the house at about 3.

We went on one day trip from Unawatuna, to the nearest town Galle, the old town is a dutch fort dating from the 1660's, and is really quite spooky. A few people still live there but it is mostly empty, it feels like a ghost town, but is very pituresque.
