Despite the dubious facilities, and the incessant smoking on the bus the journey was truly spectacular. I thought I had pretty much exhausted the possibilities of amazing mountain roads in Nepal, but where the Nepalis would have just looked at this route and thought 'nah', the Chinese thought 'Yes, there are a number of enormous mountain ranges in between these two towns, and no there are no obvious valleys which we can follow along the way....perfect lets build a road'
This part of Sichuan is on the Tibetan plateau, and the people and buildings are Tibetan. Xiancheng is a fairly nondescript town, now largely populated by workers from the nearby mine, but we found a little GH behind the bus station in one of the traditional Tibetan block houses, which are HUGE. It was amazing to get to see inside the house, and what they lack in decoration outside they most certainly make up for inside, you would NOT want a hangover in any of these bedrooms.
