Today we drove for 6 hours to Myrtle Beach. It was a long drive but the scenery was absolutely spectacular. We started off in the mountains of Virginia and drove through North Carolina where things started to flatten out. We stopped for lunch in Biscoe and popped into Walmart to stock up. Apparently there's nothing you can't buy there as they had an aisle selling shotguns and bullets! By the time we hit South Carolina the temperature had reached 90 degrees and we were boiling in the car! South Carolina is so green and open, scattered with idyllic houses and LOTS of churches and crosses. We were on smaller highways so got to drive through pretty little towns. We got petrol at one and all the women there stopped what they were doing when they heard Alan's accent and begged him to keep talking! They don't get many out of towers apparently!
Myrtle Beach is not exactly what we imagined. It's quite tacky, full of motels and car parks, really built up and a bit old fashioned. The beach is phenomenal though. It regularly gets voted one of the best in the US. We walked along it at sunset to second avenue pier. We ate at the open air bar there which gave us views all along the beach. You would think the view would make it expensive but the beer was only $2! The bar was quite a walk from our motel but so worth it and there was no way we were getting back in the car after being in it all day.
