And so it begins: my
three-month adventure in Spain...

I arrived at the hotel last night after
several flights, a crash course on the public transportation system, and a
brief walk in the pouring rain. The umbrella was a great idea grandma, thanks.
There was no night life for me in Barcelona as I tried to avoid jet-lag and
went to bed early. It was raining this morning but I couldn't complain too much
because after all, I was in Barcelona, Spain.

I opted to play it safe and call a taxi
for a ride to the train station instead of battling the metro system in another
language, a full backpack, and a 50.5 lb suitcase that doesn't roll so well on
stairs. Maybe I backed down from a good challenge but I really didn't want to
be late. It worked and I got to the station a good hour early for a café con
leche and some people watching. I became nervous when I noticed they scan your
luggage for the long distance trains. Apparently they didn't care that I had a
leatherman and some bear mace or maybe I just didn't look the type. Little did
they know: I can make a bomb out of athletic tape, foot-powder, matches,
bobby-pins, and hairspray. Kidding, I don't have any bobby-pins. J

The 8 hour train ride went well and I
arrived in San Sebastian safely. Only after looking at a map did I realize that
I had literally gone coast-to-coast. Last time I did that was when I played
Whitney Martin one-on-one... all day Whit! It was neat to see how the country
changed from southern to northern Spain. The last two hours of my trip were
pretty dark but early on I could see the Meditteranean. The water is exactly
the color of my "Mediteranean" candles from World Market, crazy.

Speaking of crazy, I don't really know
where I will be staying for the most part. For now I am with a very nice couple in Hernani, just outside of San Sebastian. So if you are into checking my blog
or hearing from me, please be patient. It will all work out. Never thought of
myself as a "blogger," but several friends suggested I start. Suppose it
wouldn't hurt since I am an unemployed traveling bum and some of you are stuck
in the classroom or working the 9-5er... suckers! Don't worry though because I
will be right back there with you. But not for three months. J
