After the fiasco of leaving the festival very late in the day and arriving at Ellis Beach after dark to a too small camp site that we couldn't reverse the trailer into, we reluctantly drove to Cairns. We knew that Cris and Greg were staying in Cairns so we made some calls and sussed out who was where. Greg was at the Hilton. Not really in our budget. But Cristina was at an Ibis. So we ended up at the Cairns Colonial Club Resort for our one night of luxury. Our first resort expenditure and well worth it after a week of festivities - a bath and a shower!! Not to mention the four swimming pools! Cristina and her son Leon were staying there because they were part of the Eclipse Festival organizing entourage and dj's - and yes I got to rub shoulders again with Tsuyoshi! Then we went off to the more affordable Cairns Holiday Park (yes back to caravan park heaven) but went back to the Colonial Resort to swim and drink Verve with Cris by the pool. All very civilized! We had a surprisingly lovely time in Cairns great food, people and it was the perfect place to regroup. We had one night in Cairns with Greg, Ant's brother, and we spent that with him eating the delicious Japanese at a Ramen House - Oishi desu! And he spoilt the kids with ridiculous ice-cream combinations on the Esplanade.

On day 4 in Cairns we organised a day trip to Fitzroy Island with the Rowdy Roadtrippers – Leanne, Paul, Riley, Nikkita and Archie. We had a gorgeous day filled with relaxing on the beach, kids playing games in the trees, jumping on the ocean trampoline, a glass bottom boat ride and silliness on a paddle ski. Of course I would like to say filled with awesome snorkeling, but alas I can't. The reef from Fitzroy Island was rather disappointing. The some of the coral was bleached and we saw very few tropical fish, and there was a northerly wind so the visibility was not good at all. We left having had a great day, but dismayed with what the Great Barrier Reef was offering us. Ant and I deeply hoped that the entire reef wasn't in a similar state as it was around Fitzroy Island. We both want to give the kids a Great Barrier reef experience that they will remember like we had when we were kids. After saying last goodbyes to the Craig family, once again, we headed back to the Ramen Japanese restaurant we had had dinner with Greg a couple of nights earlier. Seriously delicious!!!
