Today we hooked up with our new friends Brian and Joanna, jumped on a boat and headed off to Ambergris Caye, San Pedro, to check out what one of the other islands had to offer and see if we were missing anything. We weren't.
San Pedro is really a busy place, more people, more golf carts, more trucks, more shopping... just generally caotic. If you are the type that must have a night life and entertainment provided for you, this is the island you want to stay at. You can't wander about in your bare feet and swim suit like you can on Caye Caulker. Oddly the airstrip is almost on the middle of the island so right in the center of the city. The first time I heard about Belize was from a client I worked with up north and he was on and on about how you could fly to the island, grab your bag and walk off the airstrip to your hotel. You can totally do that in San Pedro.
We rented a golf cart for several hours and toured around the whole island. First we headed to the north end where all the rich kids live and the nice resorts were and found the Crazy Canuck bar - since two of us were Canadian we stopped in and had a visit with the owner who was from Calgary!
Then we headed to the other end of the island which was a little more run down but definately more of a residential type area. To get there you had to cross the new bridge, people promised us there was some amazing things to see across the bridge so we paid the $10 BZ toll (can you imagine!) and headed over. Someone lied to us about that and the road was pretty gnarly.
We were also instructed to go to the Rum and Cigar shop for some 'supplies' so off we went to find that. This shop was definately a very plesant surprise. Not only did it have rums of all shapes, sizes and flavors but it also had a room full of cigars! They smelt so good. As we entered the shop we were offered a shot of coffee infused rum, man was that tasty, I think that we all left with as big a bottle as we could buy. Definately a must if you run across it but I don't think it's sold in the regular stores.
The Spindrift hotel is where the famous 'Chicken Drop' lottery is held but only on Wednesday evenings! This strange event draws a large crowd. Basically they bring out a large piece of plywood with numbered squares on that you can 'buy' for a fee of either $1 or $10, then out comes the chicken. The 'chicken tosser' blows lightly under the tail feathers of the chicken for stimulation and tosses the chicken onto the board (gently of course), then people stand around anxiously waiting for the chicken to poop on the board. Once the chicken does the deed the winner has to clean the board off before they get their money, apparently it's an honor to do this. Just confirming people will do anything for a party!
Back to the relaxation and calmness of Caye Caulker we go.
