Where I stayed
Sportsmen's Lodge in Eastpoint, Florida
I am writing this on March 2nd even though it is about Feb. 29.
Day 10 -
Savannah Georgia to Apalachicola Florida (Our 9th State)
Stats - 550 KM & 8 Hrs. in car.
We left the River Street in (reluctantly) this morning and headed AWAY from the water for the first time since Day 4.
The drive across country was a little ho-hum after being on the coast, but it improved when we got to the
'Forgotten Coast', as they call the Gulf Coast on the Florida Panhandle
...and then came the fog. Not bad fog but enough to keep blue skies at bay and make the water colourless. It only stuck with us (except for a couple small breaks) ALL the way to New Orleans TWO days from now!
We had decided earlier to stop at Carabelle FL for the night, but when we got there we couldn't find the owner or get them on the phone so we decided to keep going to Apalachicola. A little down the coast we came across a group of Dolphins fishing in the shallows just before sunset in the fog. They are such fun to see. Just before the bridge to Apalachicola there's a sign to the 'Sportsman's Lodge'. I had read about it before the trip so we thought we'd have a look. Well, talk about 'old' Florida! This place was like a cross between Wildwood Lodge and Cliffside Resort. We LOVED it. Very cheap, right on the water (people fishing from the bank), Shingles on the steps up to our 2nd floor room (so you don;t slip), carpets on the pathways (keeps the weeds down), dozens of Peacocks everywhere (on the ground AND in the trees). Very unique, ine of a kind lodging. Owners are very nice room was clean and bed was comfortable. What else do you need!
We walked down to one of only a couple restaurants on this (east) side of the bridge for dinner, and returned after dark to the squeals/shrieks if the Peacocks in the trees. Felt like we were entering the jungle. Early bed after a longer driving day and off again tomorrow.
