When traveling lesser-developed countries, talking about toilets is commonplace.

Learning how to use them properly isn't always so straightforward.

I remember the first time I was truly perplexed by a toilet--on the coast of Spain.

Seems there was this hole in the ground--but I couldn't figure if it was a place to wash sand off your feet or...if it was for something else. And, you really don't want to watch other people to figure it out!

This was my first "squat toilet"--a ceramic creation that sits flush with the ground, includes two "non-skid" surfaces for your feet, and a hole to aim for!

In Southeast Asia, upon arrival, you enter "waterworld"!

This is a land devoid of toilet paper, devoid of handles to flush, but blessed with copious quantities of water!

How to use the thing, you ask?

I really don't know!

I know how I use it...but...who's to say I am correct? And, besides, I would rather not discuss form, style, or approach!

What I do know is..."mandies" are places that include water troughs or holding areas, a faucet to open for replenishing the supply, and a plastic scoop or bucket for "flushing" and "cleansing" purposes!

What I also know is...when finished, your butt is wet!
