Our journey today took us to Chartres. I don't know what I had read but I expected this place to be like a medieval city. It was anything but, a bustling hive of activity in a relatively modern city. Another narrow carpark underground with car spaces that are tailored towards the smart car.

A walk through Chartres revealed that although modern, this city still maintained it's charm and it was beautiful. In the older part of town was the Notre Dame Chartres which is actually renowned for it's nlue stained glass windows. I was stopped in my tracks by the design in the stonework at the entry of the Cathedral. I am always in awe about the attention to detail for their statues and their carvings. Inside was equally as impressive and the stained glass windows definitely radiated the colour blue.

What a beautiful place that is going to take such a long time to restore, however it is really great to see the preservation of such historical buildings such as these. Some of the statues had no heads, but that is just a reminder to people like me how old this place actually is. The Cathedral was huge and everywhere you looked there was either a window, a statue or a arch which had medieval character.

A great visit to the Cathedral was topped off by lunch in a restaurant across the road. It was here that Scott and I tried our first escargot (snails). Scott jokingly said "Care to share a plate of snails?" "OK" came the response. The look on his face was priceless and he knew that he couldn't back down now. We expected them to be particularly slimy however they are indeed quite tough. They don't taste like your average garden snail, not that I eat them on a regular occasion, however they were not too bad. Not something I would rush back for seconds for.

My main was pigs foot and I think I was getting just a little too adventurous. I did a swap with Scott halfway through the meal as I just couldn't finish it. After a stroll around the shops we headed to our next destination. This place is definitely not somewhere you want to visit. Although our hotel was nice and tidy, with an ok restaurant, the surrounding area is not. It is like a misery tower heaven and when Scott went to the shops to obtain us some supplies, he said that he felt lucky to have returned unscathed.

Needless to say, we didn't venture far tonight!
