Today was very short by distance. We had the individual time trial from 15 to 45 kms but we didn't time ourselves. We enjoyed riding through the game reserve. We saw several springbok beside and on the road.
Today is the day of the Naked Mile. This is a TDA tradition so in that spirit after lunch we rode 200m down the road and in view of the riders and staff having lunch we stripped off our clothes and rode away naked. We rode 3-4km then dressed. We found out later that this set off a chain reaction of nudity. Several riders rode in the buff all afternoon, in serious danger of sunburn. A group of 11 girls rode together naked and actually had a nude Coke stop! One exhibitionist actually rode the entire 86km day in only her helmet and shoes.
We arrived early at Sesriem. This is the gateway to Sossulvlai and the Namib Nakluft Park. Western Namibia has the world’s largest sand dunes reaching 150km inland from the Atlantic Ocean. They are literally mountains of sand. This afternoon we took a land cruiser for the hour-long drive to Sossulvlai and the dunes. We climbed a huge dune and ran down the side falling in the soft sand. We then drove further to Deadvlei to climb a dune and watch the sunset. Ro and I found our own little dune and ate a snack and drank wine as the sun set.
