Saturday April 21st, Stage 76, Maun to Bush Camp. 157km.
Today was long and flat. We camped at a thorny bush camp. Someone lit a campfire after dinner and I was concerned that they would start a brushfire. It is very dry here.
Sunday April 22nd, Stage 77, Bush Camp to Ghanzi. 140km.
Another long flat ride. Camp was just outside the town of Ghanzi and we drank a beer and went for a swim at the hotel in town before dinner
Monday April 23rd, Stage 78, Ghanzi to Buitenpos, Namibia. 207km
Today was the longest ride of the tour. 207km. Rosalyn decided she wanted to race today and try to win the stage. We set off at 7 and pushed hard all day. At 75km we refilled our water bottles and immediately started riding again. We did the same at the refresh stop at 150km. Ro had brought two sandwiches from breakfast but all I ate was power bars and bananas. At 180 kms after riding for 6 hours we hit the wall and slowed down, giving up the hope of winning the stage. At 200km we stopped for Coke and snacks and finished in just over 7 hours. Ro was third among the women. I begged her to never make me race again as it would likely kill me. 207 km is too long! Today’s race finished at the border and exhausted we had our passports stamped as we left Botswana and entered Namibia. The campsite was 500m past the border and riders were straggling in until sunset.
