February 23 Stage 32 Gorgetti to Hosaina 130km

It's nice to be back in the saddle again. I rode again today
and the landscape is changing. We have come down from the Central Ethiopian
Plateau and the air is warmer and the vegetation more tropical. We climbed
1748m and descended 1474m today. After a great ride we took a break in the
small town of Hosaina just 2km from our campsite. I felt well enough to drink
beer. I talked with the owner of the hotel there who lives in Toronto since the
80’s and visits Ethiopia annually for a few weeks. His kids attend the same
high school I did. Small world we both thought.

The campsite on the far side of town was dismal. The land
had been bulldozed and it looked like we were camping in an open pit mine. The
gallery of locals was huge as well and immediately things started to go
missing. The flag that is put up along the roadside to indicate the end of the
ride was taken. One rider lost his GPS from his bike and another his tent bag.
Despite having a rope to cordon off our site and armed local security one of
the privy tents was actually stolen before sunset! Security did question me
when I got up through the night to pee. I guess a white guy with a lamp on his
head looked pretty suspicious to them. Can’t wait to leave this place.

We were so glad that you are able to blog again. We are hooked on following this amazing adventure and can't wait to hear all the rest when you get back.
You are inspiring in the way you have handled all the facets of this trip so far. Stay safe and keep your fabulous sense of humour.

Yes, I agree.... totally hooked on your blog, but glad to be reading in a comfy chair.. not riding! Just heard about your cause too- mental health, good choice- everyone needs it!!
Big Hugs, and glad you are safe.
