well, we missed them in laos so we shall try in cambodia. as it turns out, Kratie is their place of choice during the monsoon season.  these super endangered species of irrawaddy dolphins live in mekong and conjoining rivers. they are completely fresh water.

we got on a boat and were able to spot about 10 or more of these dolphins up close(within 20 meters) and about 10 more off in the far distance. they usually travel in little groups and surface for air with in 20 seconds of each other. they arent too shy, but they also arent like those playful trained dolphins you see at sea world.  the river is their turf and they dont have any natural predators, besides man.

the good part is that there are now sanctuaries  for these dolphins. however, the sanctuaries are only an tisty bitsy portion of area compared to their entire migration patterns. it is difficult to say if this species of dolphins will survive extinction.  there are only about a hundred or so left, which doesnt make much of a gene pool. so unless the govt or an ngo takes major action in preserving these dolphins, im afraid that within my lifetime they might parish from earth.
