We came to Chachapoyas in search of some lesser gringo discovered Pre-Inca sights with plans to head east into the Amazon from there. We were planning to do a 8 day boat trip on the river but after hearing grusome stories of jungle life our enthusiasm vanished and our plans rapidly changed. Being stuck on a boat in the sweltering heat, being eaten alive my mozzies and having bugs lay eggs under our skin doesnt sound much fun and weve got nothing to prove. So we have now decided to wait until Bolivia where you can do day trips into the jungle, its far less touristy, there is a better chance of seeing pink dolphins and its cheaper and far more sensible me thinks.

From Chachapoyas we went on an action packed 2 day tour taking in

* Kuelap, a spectacular Pre-Inca walled fortress and city, set on the summit of a huge mountain.

* Revash, a site of burial chulpas or mausoleums built high up on a mountain cliff face dating back to 1250AD.

* Leymebamba to visit the local fiesta and more importantly the museum, with a facinating collection of over 200 mummies almost all in perfect condition. Creepy but facinating! I think i spent an hour just staring at them.

It was an excellent couple of days spent with a group lovely people, Stacy and Vicky from Jersey, Andre (English) and Marie (French) from London and Martin and Alyssa from Quebec, our surrogate family.

We topped off our last night in Chachapoyas with a flame grilled meat feast, copious amounts of beer (well 2 bottles actually, it doesnt take much these days) and a very dodgey Peruvian nightclub/time warp to the 80s!

80´s quote of the day.

" Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it " - Ferris Bueller
