Mexico and Central America have completely outdone all our expectations we had before the trip. We thought weīd do a little round up of our favourite parts and things from the trip so far, they are in no particular order and are just off the top of our heads:
Beer: The most important category comes first. Keiths selection is the dark beer, Moza, from Guatemala, although he still thinks more testing is necessary. Tashas favourite is Atlas from Panama, it tastes of citrus, more of a girly lager.
Food: Keiths choice is the Seven Chilli Salsa Tacos from Mexico, and Mexican street food in general. While Tashas favourite was the Nicotamales from Leon in Nicaragua although its a close contest between that and the sweet corn in Mexico City.
Non-alcoholic drink: Tashas favourite is the Banana Licuado with nutmeg (fresh milk shake) that she had in El Poy, on the Salvador/Honduras border, which Keithīs was the fresh Strawberry Batido he had in the Boquete Highlands.
Journey: Tashas favourite journey was the banana licuado fuelled chicken bus ride from the El Salvador border to Santa Rosa de Copan in Honduras while Keiths was the two-day off road chicken bus journey from Coban to Huehuetenango in Guatemala.
Funniest Moment: Keiths has to be the barber shop in Coban, Guatemala, where he was left with one of the more amusing moustaches you are likely to see and Tashas was the chicken bus ride between Huehue and Xela in Guatemala where everyone on the bus ended up on the floor at virtually every turn of the windey downhill journey.
Scariest Moment: Tashas encounter with the scorpion at Tenacitita in Mexico hasnt been eclipsed for her yet, and Keiths scariest encounter was the mountain bike brakes failing on one of the steeper downhill sections of the aptly named El Imposible national park in El Salvador!
City: For Tasha its Guadalajara in Mexico and for Keith its our first stop Mexico City.
Town: We both voted Suchitoto in El Salvador for this one, it really is a gem.
Hostel/Hotel: We both voted for Mama y Papas in Tacuba and Javiers Casa Frolaz in Santa Ana, both in El Salvador.
Natural Attraction: For Tash it was Hierve el Agua in Mexico, the beautiful sulphur pools and petrified waterfalls overlooking a luscious forested valley. Keiths was Semuc Champey in Guatemala, which is quite simply on of the most beautiful natural places we have seen.
Wildlife: Keiths has to be the Sloth he enjoyed a cup of coffee or two with in San Jose, Costa Rica. Tashas favourite wildlife moment was diving with the majestic Hawksbill turtle we saw in the Bay Islands, Honduras.
People: El Salvador wins this one by a way, the people are so friendly and helpful. Just donīt ask the local Maras gang for directions to the bank and you will be fine!
Culture: We both chose Guatemala and the Chiapas state of Mexico for the incredible indigenous cultures and communitys.
Beach: It has to be Tenacatita in Mexico for both of us, we haven`t really being doing the beach thing in many places, but this was definately another gem.
Lake: Again we both came up with the same answer, Lago Atitlan in Guatemala. I really donīt think I will ever see a more beautiful lake.
Volcano: Tashas fave was Fuego in Antigua, Guatemala, Tash got to see it erupting at night, but unfortunately Keith was asleep and couldnīt be stirred! Keiths was Poas in Costa Rica.
Ruins: Tikal cannot be eclipsed in Central America, it was the most mystical place either of us have been to. Another true gem.
Zocalo/Parque Central/Town Square: We both chose the Zocalo in Mexico City for the people watching, the street artists and general life of the place.
Coldest Place: Definately Oaxaca in Mexico, the tent certainly proved its worth in the hotel room!
Hottest Place: Our final day on Utila, Bay Islands, Honduras. The air was almost too hot to breathe and our clothes were literally soaked through with sweat, the humidity was intense!
Activity: We both loved the diving on the Bay Islands, and thats our top choice.
Architecture: Tasha loved Antigua, Guatemala and Keiths favourite place was the diverse area of Casco Antiguo in Panama City.
Worst Hotel: Hotel Hamilton in Guadalajara wins hands down here, rent your room by the hour, sleep on sticky sheets and try not to imagine what those stains are on the walls, needless to say we didnt stay there again!
Most Expensive Hotel: A mighty 14 UK Pounds at the Hotel Aranjuez in Costa Rica. Complete luxury and the best brekky in town!
Cheapest Hotel: A whopping 90p for the lovely Posada Xetewal in San Pedro, Guatemala.
Act of Kindness: While we were hitch-hiking in Mexico, A family gave us a lift 40km out their way from Melaque to Tenacatita.
