It's a typical working mexican town, not that pretty, not that clean but it has a certain charm, you can't quite put your finger on, I guess its the people that make it, as they do in most of Mexico. In the evening we sat on our hotel terrace overlooking the Zocalo and spent the evening watching Mexicans being Mexicans, which is always enjoyable! The nicest thing about the whole day and night, is that we didn't see one other Gringo.
The next morning we took a bus to Palenque town, near the famous ruins of Palenque
However, we are staying in an amazing place just outside of the town called El Penchan. It's a small community of accomodations and restaurants bang in the middle of the Jungle! We are surrounded by Hummingbirds, Parrots (most of which are hand tame), Spider and Howler Monkeys, and all sorts of Lizards, Snakes and god knows what else!
It really is a beautiful place, all of the buildings are thatched or palapa roofed and they all blend in to the Jungle. As you can probably guess its a travellers haven, so we have met a lot of cool people here, and also bumped into people we have already met in the last month or so.
Tomorrow we are going to the ruins of Palenque (the biggest mayan ruins in Mexico) in the morning and doing a trip to 3 waterfalls and swimming spots in the afternoon, as its so hot and humid in the Jungle we need to cool off!
The next day we are taking a 2 day tour which combines our ticket out of Mexico
They transport us to Flores in Guatemala, and we should get there about 3pm.
We plan to visit the ruins at Tikal and then move down to Antigua for our spanish lessons and possibly some voluntary work in a National Park.
