Te Anau is a little town on a lake near the west coast. It is the launching point for Milford Sound tours and offers a lot of tourist activities. By the time we got there we were a bit grumpy. It had been raining and was cold and we planned on cooking fish for lunch but couldn't find a public grill anywhere.
We had recently bought a tent and sleeping bags. The bags were great - very cozy and let us stay in cheaper cabins. We didn't want to use the tent the first time on a rainy day so we stayed at a hostel. It was a nice double room that shared a lounge, kitchen, and bathroom with one other room. It was inhabited by a German couple who claimed that the rain followed them everywhere they went.
We fished a bit and borrowed The Fellowship of the Ring from the hostel
That second night in Te Anau we decided to take a tour of the glowworm cave. We don't generally like tours as much but there was no other way to see the glowworms. It was fabulous. The worms themselves were interesting but the bests part was the cave. It was formed by water and still has rivers flowing through it and we took bridges and rafts to get to the worms. It was all very interesting and then we got to the main glowworm cave and turned off all the lights. It was like staring into the sky on a moonless night. It was cool and very much worth the time and money.
