Larochette, Luxembourg (Kim)

How do we decide where to go? Well the quick answer to that is there are no rules. We started with a few wants. Dave wanted to see friends and start in Europe. Kim wanted to follow the good weather and meet interesting people. From that starting point we try to follow a natural progression in a direction we think we want to go. One of side effects of this kind of planning means we may spend a little longer in a country or go in a direction that causes us to miss some of the obvious tourist sites.

Luxembourg came about like this. We'd thought about seeing tons of Germany and we actually wrote to some people in the club to make plans to do just that. We kept thinking when will we have a chance to go to a really tiny little country like this not counting Lichtenstein? At the last minute we changed a bunch of plans around and headed on out to visit Karin and the dogs, proud residents of Larochette, Luxembourg.

This prosperous miniscule land has a motto Mir wlle bleiwe wat mir sin - 'We want to remain what we are' The country is slightly smaller than Rhode Island but the inhabitants seem to enjoy a very high standard of living. Everyone speaks a little German and a little French but a true resident will speak Luxembourgish.

Karin showed us a wonderful time and gave us lots of opportunity to visit the locals. We went to 2 different parties. One was a pizza party. Our vegetarian hosts prepared about 20 meatless pizzas in an outdoor oven. They were yummy! The second party was a belated wedding celebration with about 100 guests. By the end of our stay we'd felt a little like we had on the cruise. We ate way too much food.

Karin had lots of tips to share with us about round the world travel. She spent a couple of years doing what we are doing. One tip was 'do not spend 4 months in India' like she did. She has some fabulous tattoos she has picked up in various countries. The most prominent is a cobra on her hand and wrist that was acquired in Martinique. It looks like an elaborate bracelet. Her most endearing quality (to me) is her love of animals.

We spent a little bit of time sight seeing. We took the train to Luxembourg City one day. The little town we were staying in had a medieval castle looming over it. We climbed up for a better view on our last day.
