Awakening on Saturday with only a wee hangover,we opened the blinds and were faced with the most miserable cold gray rainy shit for weather. Dunedin is famous for changing day we had rain ,sleet, snow, hail, thunder, sunshine and a 5.6 earthquake. How's that for variety? To ward off depression we ate...sweets and trong mojo omen...dressed in a variety of layers and took off in the clown car.novels. Sometime in the early afternoon we looked out and saw splendid rainbow...took this as a strong mojo omen...dressed in a variety of layers and took off in the clown car.

Lately, we tend to go north...passed Karatani ,Waitati, and were headed to Moeraki (famous for some boulders in the sea...haven't made it there yet). Saw some folks at the side of the Shag river and pulled in. They were not shagging as the name might suggest, but were a father and his two sons fishing for whitebait. Now, this is a collection of 7 varieties of transparent tiny fish that fetch up to $100 per kilo. Catch them by dipping...have to stand motionless for hours waiting for the tide to shift...or set out a series of nets at the bank's edge. The family was fun, but the boys were eager to leave and go to a Halloween party(the H holiday has leaked into NZ much to the displeasure of many). We stayed and talked and learned all about the process...good to eat, they are scooped alive and put into a batter of egg whites and made into a delicious omlette...yumola!
Whilst there( writing NZ style now) told Dad we were off to see Penguins,,,especially the rare yellow eye species. Now ther is a place where a tourist can go and for $35 per person per half hour can catch a glimpse of them. NOW THESE FOLK ARE SCOTS AND WON'T SPEND AN A CENT UNLESS FORCED TO! He told us of several rugged spot to do it on our own...much better...So off to Shag beach...passed with nary a shag....but stunning and off to the light house at Moeraki Point with rough directions...was a fantastic adventure. Found a constructed hide and watched the critters come ashore in the evening light after spending the day out at sea, as much as 20 kilometers, fishing and feeding.

After penguins, wandered into the wee bay at Moeraki...stunning. Discovered fabulous resturant...Fleur's Place...turns out it is famous..Fleur is woman who is a lively and fun story teller...we have been back twice so far,Candy is on best friend basis already. Food is is caught that day, filleted ,rinsed in sea water and cooked...beef is sublime.

Next day was Candy's choice, the trotters were running so I had to reluctanly go along. In the US horse tracks are sort of seedy...not so in NZ...great fun family fun...park your car next to the rail, have a picnic, drink beer, eat fish and chips bet on the ponies...Candy was ahead for awhile till she got a "hot tip" that ran first all the way up to the last 50 meters...Second. Great day though. Enjoy the photo gallery from today. Halloween next.
