the city of rhodes has a new town and an old town, and the 12-metre thick walled medivel part has 3 faces: one when cruiseships arrive, one when there's none, and night time. i write this at night, sitting on a bench opposite the knights of st john's master's fortress having just walked through the town. it's straight out of terrible historical movie. no lights, uneven roads, and a plethora of shadows. it's no wonder why this area has the best night life.

my story in rodos starts having me arrived late in the night and without map, yet somehow managed to find my accommodation. once day broke and i saw where i am located, the feat is all the more astonishing. my window opens onto the courtyard of a mosque. the ruins of one, i should add, thankfully, meaning no 5am wakeups for calls to prayer like in istanbul.

i know my way around the town fairly well now. it's a mixture between jerusalem and tallinn. being in the old jewish quarter and synagogue was cool when you factor in that nothing's been changed or refurbished, so in theory i was walking on the same stones as my great-grandfather.

there have been no aussies that i've been able to find and i'm going through withdrawal. i have met a few israeli couples though, and even had a boot of beer with one, à la movie beerfest.
