Athen's a riot!
Entry 15 of 22 | show all | print this entry |
actually it's not. i can't find them, and trust me, i've been looking.
oh athens. made my way to the metro for a nice 6 euro trip into the city but met a new friend along with way. this time a english girl from london whose college bar was maloney's!!!! ha. turned out we were both going to the same hostel so we set out to find it together. we made it. and just in time too, as happy hour was finished in 45 minutes. you can't argue with euro beers.
our hostel had a fun pub night and then we started a pub crawl. this is the best part - we had our own entourage. so as there were cats all over israel and turkey, here they have dogs. i don't think they're stray, but they're all over and seem to prefer to be outdoors wandering rather than in their respectives houses. our hostel has, or has adopted, about 6 dogs, all over whom are super friendly and protective on the hostel guests. how they know us so quickly i couldn't tell you, but they do. they follow/lead us whenever we leave the hostel, and ATTACK people approaching us on the street. they nearly mauled this poor greek guy. but other people to know how to deal with the barking and growls, but this guy... ha. it was hilarious, although i felt bad for him.
anyways, after a good late night out exploring the temple bar area of greece, we hopped into a cheap cab that dropped us off on the opposite side of the acropolis that we needed to be on, so we ended up wandering the streets, with no map, and no idea where we were going, and eventually made it back, in one piece, and before the rain started to chuck buckets.
today i walked around the periphery of the acropolis, waiting for tomorrow to see all the ancient sites b/c it's free. although b/c i study in ireland, i get free admission anyways, but this way i can go with other travellers that don't have that privelege. suckers. we hit up the shopping area and people watched. then i saw a tv reporter setting up and asked if i could get a photo of her pretending to interview me. well, me and my big mouth, b/c she asked if she could interview for me, about the presence of police in large numbers around the christmas tree and pedestrian mall. so at least my photo is now genuine. look for me on the AP greek story regarding athens resembling a police state now. i didn't say that i had just come from israel and am used to it, but 'twas fun all the same.
tomorrow will be ancient sites day, and at night olympiacos versus some team that will lose badly. fingers crossed for no rain. nap time now.
