wow. blown away by my first day on my own. it was quite the
feeling being on juno beach in coursuelles-sur-mer where the canadians
landed on june 6, 62 years ago. it was a beautiful day to enjoy my
first touch of the REAL atlantic (the bay near nantasket doesn't count)
and the sun was out in full force. saw what i could of the d-day sites
but wished i had a car so i could visit the cemeteries. oh! and i
finally saw a field of poppies. unfortunately it was from the train.
i'm spending the night in caen, a nice small city that was more or less
gutted by the nazis, but it's recovered and rebuilt very nicely. they
love canadians here; there are maple leafs flying everywhere and
memorials to the canadian soldiers everywhere you turn.
tomorrow it's off to the south: first stop is monpelier.
