We arrived at Heathrow at 6.45 am bleary eyed and half asleep only to be told that we had been bumped to First Class for the Madrid to Quito leg of our flight. That´s what I´m talking about! A great start to our adventure I´m sure you will agree.
First class, what can I say?! It was very difficult not too grin from ear to ear but we tried to show a little restraint and class: until I discovered the back massager in my fully adjustable chair-bed. It gradually dawned on us that we were not alone in receiving this freebe. I even saw what looked like someone abandoning their father so that they could keep their new found comfort. I was just settling down when the hostess brough round the 7 course menu and full wine list! Brilliant. I felt guilty though, really I did!
We arrived in Quito after our 13 hour pampering still a little tired and dishevelled but it could have been worse. Xavier, our pick up, met us at the airport and drove us to the family we would be staying with for the first week. Cecilla, our self proclaimed Ecuadorian mother, welcomed us with a big hug which was really nice. We then met the extended ´family´ consisting of 2 german girls, a canadian girl, a sweedish guy, a dutch lad and an englishwoman. This was totally unexpected but definitely a nice surprise! They have all made us very welcome and it has stopped the uncomfortable, languageless silences from getting too out of hand!
We have only really just begun exploring Quitobut it is a vast, sprawing, and bustling city from what we have seen so far. It is set in a deep valley between volcanos and hills. Still getting used to thing place and we are certainly a long way from Europe! We have explored the new town with its huge number of bars and hostals and today went to the botanic gardens. Tomorrow the old town and on Monday our spanish classes begin....boy do I need them!
