Jon and I flew in. We hung out that day with some guy from the Czech Republic, had some beers. We had one last night at our favorite Bangkok Blues Bar. The next day I handled some stuff online while Jon shopped for a few things. Then we had our last grilled chicken and sticky rice meal.
I can really only account for the play-by-play of this time in Bangkok. I remember feeling somewhat numb. Everything seemed surreal. There was no way I could actually be splitting off from Jon. He couldn't really be going home. We'd spent 156 days together without a break. I couldn't remember what it was like to not have him around to make comments to. We were at that pathetic point where we would say things in unison all the time because we'd spent so much time together
What happened the instant I began to travel alone? The cabbie tried to tell me I'd have to pay an extra 50 baht on top of tolls and the meter. I snapped out of my daze and yelled at him for trying to con me. He still pushed for the 50 and I started to open the door to get out at a red light, prepared to tell him to fuck off. He got really nervous and agreed to just the meter and tolls. I hoped this wouldn't be an omen of things to come while traveling alone. Shit like that almost never happened when it was me and Jon. Especially not in Bangkok.
Jon likes to give me shit about how early I like to get to the airport. When I left Jon in my taxi, I gave myself an hour and a half to get through traffic which would give me two hours to get my boarding pass, go through immigration, customs, security, etc. But my taxi ride only took half an hour. Then my flight was delayed over an hour. Yes, Jon, I was like a pig in shit with all my extra time at the airport. I read one of my books and snacked. It was weird. It was lonely. But I'd be among friends soon enough. Next stop Singapore.
