So eating Mexican food and drinking beer was not the best plan in advance of a long drive! Today I was heading down to Las Vegas for the final six days of the trip and this meant first headed back along US50 before making the long trek through the desert on US95.  Seriously that is one deserted road – a few towns of a few thousand people, a few very remote brothels (that is some way to drive for some action and these did not even bother to dress themselves as 'Ranches'!) and a just enough petrol stations to get you through.  The desolation was at once awe inspiring and also very sad.  The only areas of any real population were military bases.

Actually I really liked the splendid desolation of Nevada and it is now my third favourite state in the US (but not for Las Vegas which is somewhere I don’t ever need to come back to see).  My second favourite place Utah – which I have heard much maligned but seriously the natural beauty of the national parks is unsurpassed – even New Zealand struggles a little by comparison.  Of course my favourite place in Wisconsin cool and beautiful in a very understated way – hey the Fonz was from WI – what else do you need to know?!

And as to that Mexican and Beer?  Really bad idea and getting caught short in the desert was not fun!  Fortunately I drove into recreation area and I knew that they would have some facilities – it was not a fun experience but needs must!

Once in Vegas in my super sized suite and I was set to meet up with Mark and the rest of the crew.  Vegas is as mad as I remembered and also as tiresome – looking forward to getting out to Death Valley and a few other sights later in the week.

What I listened to.  Playlist 0057 interweaved with the world service where I heard a great documentary about an Iranian man who lives in Svalbard and has the world’s most northerly Kebab van.  Awesome.
