We left our hotel in Wadi Mousa at 8 am and stopped at a few overlooks as we eased our way from Petra.  From one, we could see the town, the valley, the rocks on both sides of the sacred way leading to the treasury.  Erwin also pointed out the Monastery but I couldn't really see it.  I hope it will be obvious when I zoom in on my photo..

After about 1 1/2 hours, we arrived at Wadi Rum for our camel ride.  Ibrahim and his camelmen helped us up onto our camels.  Erwin and I had white ones; Martin had a handsome chocolate one and the others had camel colored ones.  They all looked pretty fit except for one with a huge patch of hair missing.  We set off tied to one another....three or four to a group.  Erwin, as an experienced camel rider, wasn't tied to anyone and his camel chose to walk by itself.  These saddles were slightly different from others I have ridden on and had pommels front and rear, so it was suggested that we hold on to both as the camels got up and down....their lurching is pretty forceful.

The ride was through some beautiful country....sand and a few bits of bristly shrubs....some dirt with little rocks....and large rock formations in the distance.  We got nearer to some but mostly were out in the middle.  The sun was out but it was not too hot...at times there was a lovely breeze.  Halfway through, we stopped and had some tea.  Pam and I took photos of a bird sitting on one of the camel's heads.  At the very end we went through a rougher patch of downhill and then went over the railroad tracks to get to the road where our bus picked us up.  Betty and Catherine didn't go on the ride and stayed with the bus.

After another hour or so, we arrived in Aqaba, settled into our hotel rooms.  There is a swimming pool on the roof and a nice view of the Red Sea.  Catherine and I went to check out the shopping.  I bought an orange print Bedouin scarf and some postcards and stamps.  Catherine came back to the hotel to sit by the pool and I went to look for the Red Sea.  I walked down our hotel street but couldn't get access to the shore...hotels and walls.  Then I looked at the map again and saw that the yacht club and beach were at the end of the main street so I went into the yacht yard and checked it out.  I saw one of the private hotel beaches.  Then since the beach wasn't that much farther away, I walked down there.

When I got back to the hotel, I drank a lot of water and took a shower to cool off, read a little before I uploaded a set of photos from the camel ride and some from yesterday's trip to Petra.  I wasn't at all happy with the camel ride photos...the light is weird with the Lumix...I wonder why.  Pam has a new Canon with 35x optical zoom.  Hmmm.
