So I did see them off after all.  I woke up as Catherine was quietly attempting to pack up in the dark.  I joined them for early breakfast at 5 am but only had some juice and muffins so as not to keep me up.  We said goodbye again and it was sad to see them go.

When I got back to the room, I read for a bit and then went to sleep.  I must have woken up again about 8 am since I finished my second breakfast.... my normal one with olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, hard-boiled egg and hummus and other 8:30 am.  I then took care of some chores...did my handwashing, started charging my various batteries, downloading photos on all the current camera cards and one filled one from the Nikon.   Then I got a call from the desk telling me I had to move because they needed the triple for some new people.  In one way, I can understand but it is a bit annoying to have to move after they assured me I could have the that I don't have Erwin and Explore's clout.  So after numerous trips between the rooms, I am now finishing up my blog entries.  I couldn't get the wifi but maybe it is only in the is pretty weak so I don't know that I would be successful downloading any photos....or is it uploading now?

Somehow I never got to the lobby for wifi.  I read a bit...I worked on photos.  Then sometime after 4 pm, I finally got it together for a trip to the city center.  Map in hand, I headed down the hill, taking in intersections and noting the landmarks.....all to no avail.  I got to the fruit and vegetable market and marveled again at all the lovely produce.  I do love piles of fresh produce!  I took in the scent of spices in sacks piled high and different kinds of nuts and snacks.  I ended up wandering out of the market and then made my way back and bought some replace Betty's that I somehow lost...of course, she is gone now.

Then I started to head back.  I had noted that I was on King Hussein Street so I followed it back.  Once somehow I strayed but I found it again.  At some point things did not look so familiar but I really had no way of knowing since going down the hill I was much too watchful of where I was putting my feet to notice my other surroundings.  I looked at my map...only to realize that the hotel did not after all appear to be on King Hussein Street.  I didn't see the steep uphill climb that I had walked so perilously down.  A few cab drivers tried to get me to ride with them but I refused.  Then I thought I should probably ask for directions.  I was asking a furniture store person when a man told me I was far away from Hotel Toledo.  Of course, he would say that.  He offered to take me there for 1.5 how far could that be (about $2.25).  I decided to trust him.  He had lived in Chicago for 12 years and showed me his expired driver's license.  He was driving downhill.  I became a bit concerned....about to say something...what could I say??  when he stopped in front of the Hotel Toledo!  I gave him 1.5 dinars but he wanted another.  I didn't begrudge it since he had saved me a bit of trouble.

Now it was around 6.  Dinner wouldn't be for another 1.5 hours so I went back to my room and read or something...I can't remember now.  I decided at some point to eat in....finished all the pistachios that I could open, ate some leftover breakfast bread with the fake nutella spread, drank my leftover beer.  Hmmm, I think there was something else in this well-balanced nutritious feast.  I fell asleep while reading so that was the end to my first solo day.
