Where I stayed
Today we were up early after a poor hostel breakfast and went on
an excursion to the Perito Moreno glacier on a tour bus with Ivan the driver and Ximena our tour guide....We drove on an old historical dirt road. We had our first photo stop for the sunrise and then for an old estancia fitted out for tourists with animals typical of the area.so we tourists could
run around chasing them with our cameras.
The glacier is huge! We took a walk along the shore of a glacial lake to
catch our first glimpses of the glacier. Then we drove to the glacier park site where there were
boardwalks at different levels to view the glacier...We had over 2 hrs there and the guide suggested that we spend it on the southern side of the glacier
We were all
hoping to get a photo of a huge chunk falling off and splashing in the lake but
I think only one person -Mel-got a good shot of a falling piece. Yet, when I looked closely at my photos, there is one where it does indeed look as if something has fallen into the water. We could hear the
glacier cracking and making thundering noises but whenever I looked I never saw
anything falling so I gave up. It was very, very impressive. I think it is 4
km across at the end where it goes into the lake and it goes all the way
down...not floating on the water. It is one of the few glaciers in the world
that is not receding. I kept looking for those dark blue parts like you always
see on the photos and postcards but there only seemed to be a few blue slivers. Somehow though there are blue sections when you look at the photos of the glacier.
The top was rough-looking...sort of like whipped meringue. Some of the glacier was dirty looking but most of it
was a bright white....brighter when the sun came out. As we left, the sky had
become a bright blue. This seems to be a theme for us....we come to gray skies
and when we are leaving, they clear up
to see it.
Dinner was at an expensive restaurant - the food was fantastic! Our group was so noisy that it embarrassed Hilary and
Sarah because people were looking at our table. I had Patagonian trout with
head and tail but didnīt like it all that much. The king crab croquettes as appetizer were
very nice though. I got in a little past 12:30 but some of the others didnīt
make it in until 4 or 5 am. I left my hat in the bar that we went to after dinner. I heard later that Anki and Mick were trying it on for laughs. Lou says she wants a beret now too.
