Where I stayed
I left Albany on February 17th and got to Rio de Janeiro on the afternoon of the 18th.
Here in Rio at the beginning of my big Patagonia trip, everything has gone pretty smoothly except for getting lost near the hotel on a short walk. It is hard to get directions if you don't understand Portuguese but eventually I made it.
I have met most of my group of 18 - mostly young people with one other older person but everyone seems very nice. I also met my roommate Louise, a 23-year-old from Sidney, Australia. We had our group meeting. Since this is an overland-style trip, we are going to get set chores - like taking care of the garbage - during each leg of the trip plus we will have rotating teams for daily meals when we are camping
We have a mix of people from the UK, Australia and Sweden plus Holland. I don't think there is any one else from the US. I am looking forward to the Brazil to Buenos Aires section. We should see some animals and lots of birds in the big marsh area - maybe they will be big birds like the ones
in the Everglades so that I can see them too. It looks as if we will have internet in most places except for the bush camps and some of the campgrounds - the competition might be high because there are 3 overland trucks going south from here - each with 18 overlanders and 2 crew members.
No photos from this day except for miscellaneous trip souvenirs - hotel cards and tickets.
