Where I stayed
day! It had been pretty chilly at night, but did get
warm during the day.
Since it is Easter today, we were awakened before 8 am....our first sleep-in day
in awhile...by a truckful of teens in bunny ears looking for Easter eggs under
our tents while their leader was yelling "neigh, neigh." We think it might have been
for a horse sound since they spoke English,. I think. Our people were quite
was pretty bizarre.
Bariloche is in the lake district so there is a beautiful mountain lake next to
city. After our breakfast of crepes with sugar and
lemon juice this am, I took the bus to Bariloche center from our campground
(which is 11 km north of the city), One of the first things I saw as I started walking around town
was the chain-saw wood sculpture exhibition in the central plaza. The
plaza is surrounded by rustic stone public buildings and a log-house
police station. Bariloche must be the rose capital as well as the
chocolate capital of Argentina since there were tons of roses in
bloom. Actually, roses seem very popular all around this area.
Besides the chocolate shops, many other tourist shops were open --
mainly for Argentinian tourists. I bought some presents for my family,
including an ugly mate cup for Serge from the craft vendors. I
borrowed some pesos from Deb when I ran into her on the street so I
could use the internet
greeting on facebook. Serge had sent Theo's report card as an
attachment but unfortunately I couldn't open it.
Since it is Easter
Sunday, I had been afraid that everything would be closed, but not at all. I went shopping along with many, many
Argentinians on holiday buying Easter candy. There are at least a dozen
chocolate shops here and they are packed. I went to Mamuschka, recommended by
the Lonely Planet guide as the best, bought some gifts and had a large hot chocolate,
brioche and minitorte Mamuschka. I OD'ed on chocolate. Tthe hot chocolate itself was
very, very thick...more the consistency of pudding...I ate the little brioche
but could only manage one-half of my minitorte and it was only about 4 inches in
My cook group is working on our stew. so I needed to get back to the campground by 5 pm. When I got back, no one else was there until 6 pm. It took 3 hrs to prepare the stew. It turned out to be a big success for all those who were there to eat it. A group of people had decided to go deluxe and get rooms in Bariloche for the night. Mick especially liked the stew and planned to have leftovers for breakfast. Mel did a great job.
Tomorrow we are going horseback riding with an Argentian BBQ for lunch. Ours will
be the easy ride for the non-gallopers. The gallopers are going on another ride. The countryside should be fantastic. I
need to manage my cameras because the small one is low on battery power.
