Where I stayed

Flag of Argentina  , Patagonia,
Tuesday, March 30, 2010

We had a 7 am start.  The moon was on the western horizon - quite stunning with blue sky and pink above.  The sunrise was orange backlit in the east.  Do these conflict?...I am not sure about the dates on some of my notes..

We took a short ferry ride, only 30 minutes, across at San Sebastian .-
no penguins again in the Straits of Magellan... after crossing the

border again.. Both Chile and Argentina had their customs and
immigration in the same building so the passport stamping was not too
onerous.  We had crossed into Chile and now were crossing back into

We traveled through more Patagonia-- vast expanses with a few guanaco.  When Mick was our driver today, he pushed the truck and us...short stops, etc.  We stopped at one gas/fast food stop - a YPC chain station.  People were
eating hot dogs, empanadas and huge sandwiches.  We thought we had hours to go to
El Calafate from here.  The last time he did it, Mick said

it took 16 hours but that was before Amber our truck was worked on.

I napped a bit today.  The landscape is changing to rolling hills as we drive west.  I would wake up, snap a few pictures, and go to sleep again.

We got into El Calafate at 5 pm.
so it wasn't such a long day after all.   We were near enough to walk into town so I went shopping and bought sox, a watch, book and a map.  Mick calls the hostel a witch's house because of its Victorian architecture.  Actually, this is one of the nicest hostels we have been in.  Sarah, Hilary and I are sharing a room with Ben.  They were a bit chintzy with breakfast - I guess because we have a reduced rate of some sort.  But it was OK.  I got some extras by mistake - oh, yeah, I think the extra was milk for my coffee.

I went out for dinner with Anki and Mick and some of the guys.  It was Mick's favorite all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet.  He loves the chef with his machete chopping up huge chunks of steak, lamb and whatever other meat there is in the BBQ section.  The food was good - too tempting to go for seconds and thirds though.  Not much room for dessert,

Tomorrow we

have to go to the grocery store and all 4 cook groups are buying food for

dinner.   Our group might do beef hasnīt been done yet.  Some of us

are counting the number of cook days we have left.
