We left Paraty early in the morning and drove south along the coast before heading west.  The coastal road was hilly.  As we headed west, we began to see sugar cane fields.  We arrived in Brotas at our first campground just outside the small town.  Nearby there was a river park with rapids for the town's youngsters to practice their white-water kayaking so that they could retain their championship.  The first night in the tent was a bit stuffy.  I think the tents might have been damp while packed away for so long.

I walked into town to try to get some more money and tried several ATMs before being successful.  I didn't always know how to get English translations so sometimes I had to guess in order to find my checking account - that could have contributed to the failure rate.  But we did find that often the ATMs seemed to be out of money.  Even without getting cash, we went to the supermarket to get our booze.  This seems to be a recurrent theme as well.  As in the overland trip in southern Africa, our priorities seemed to be money, food, booze and internet-not necessarily in that order   Since quite a few people had computer notebooks and wifi, some only had to search for wifi.  We had our first gourmet camp meal provided by cook group #1:  chili and mashed potatoes, bananas with homemade chocolate sauce.  It set a very high standard for the rest of us.
