2010 U.S. Road Trip – Day 30 -
7/18/2010 – Yellowstone, WY

It's been 2 days since we left Seattle
and now we are about to begin our 3rd day since leaving
Seattle. We are finally destined for Yellowstone National Park. We
will be heading for the west entrance. During our trip we passed
through several small old western towns. It was nice to see that the
architecture has been reserved. There weren't any major cities
between Dillon, MT and Yellowstone, a distance of about 140 miles.
Our last stop before reaching Yellowstone was Earthquake Lake. The
lake was created by the 1959 earthquake that caused a rock slide that
blocked the river. The National Park Service did create a spillway
that allowed the water to flow from the lake but the blockage was
never fully removed.

Soon after leaving Earthquake Lake we
entered West Yellowstone, MT, home of the west entrance to
Yellowstone National Park. About 5 minutes after entering the park
we crossed into Wyoming. Our first order of business was to find a
campsite that we will occupy for the next 3 nights. It is nearly
impossible to find an available campsite during the peak season but I
knew that if I arrived early in the evening that I may get lucky.
The gentleman at the park entrance informed me that all the
campgrounds were full except Lewis Lake, which is 60 miles south of
the west entrance.

It took us 2 hours to get to Lewis Lake
but it was worth the drive. During the drive we saw elk resting on a
river island. We didn't stop for any pictures because we wanted to
secure a campsite as soon as possible so we traveled on. Upon
reaching Lewis Lake we took the first available campsite without
looking any further. I can't believe we actually found a campsite in
Yellowstone during the peak season but we did it. Now we can go out
and enjoy the park knowing that we have a campsite to come back to in
the evening.

After setting up camp we headed for the
market to pickup some food items and to eat dinner. After dinner we
headed for Old Faithful. During out trip to Old Faithful my daughter
noticed an elk grazing on the side of the road. We stopped to take
photos and noticed several other elk close by. We then proceeded
further up the road where we noticed other cars had stopped. They
were watching a bull elk grazing. We took several photos of it and
then decided to continue our trip to Old Faithful.

We arrived at Old Faithful just in time
to see an eruption. After taking several photos we headed back to
camp to get some rest.
