2010 U.S. Road Trip – Day 14 -
7/2/2010 – Destination North Rim, AZ

Got a good nights rest at Jacob Lake
campground. We will hike into the canyon today on the North Kaibab
Trail. The plan was to start the hike before 7 a.m. but we got a
late start and didn't start the hike until 9 a.m. The trail starts
in a wooded area and as the trail descends into the canyon the trees
thin out and a full view of the canyon can be seen. Our first water
stop will be around the 1.7 mile mark at the Supai Tunnel where
primitive toilets and water is available. It took us just short of 2
hours to get to this first rest stop. After resting and eating we
continued down into the canyon. It will take us approximately 3
hours to reach the second and final rest stop, Roaring Springs.
Roaring Springs is 4.7 miles into the canyon. We had lunch and
rested for an hour before heading back up to the rim. It was now 3
p.m. and it had taken us 5 hours to reach Roaring Springs. We
figured it would take us about 7 hours to go back up to the rim due
to the climbing that we had to do. Much to our surprise we were
climbing just as fast as we descended into the canyon. We had
reached the Supai Tunnel rest area in just 3 hours. We took a short
rest and continued to our final destination. We reached the
trailhead in just under 2 hours, just before dark at 8:12 p.m. It
was a long day. We had hiked 3000 feet into the canyon. The views
were spectacular. The whole family was tired and happy to see the
