Left Portland for the Canada border and ever though the sky didn't look very nice I didn't get rained on, great... It is definitely getting colder and I added another layer of clothing but the natives are driving around with the top down on their convertibles!!! I picked a campground that sounded good but there was no state campground in the area.
The little town is called Eastport, about thirty miles south of the Canada border, and I was told it's the easternmost city in the USA. Must have been maybe a couple thousand people and I went into town to get something to eat and the waitress talked my leg off since I was the only customer. It was a pretty place and on the water, of course, and one of it's local attractions is the Big Sow.. What's that?? It's a whirlpool that forms in the middle of the river at certain tides and it's pretty big.. One of the workers said he was in the river, it's a mile wide or so, in his thirty six foot power boat and wasn't looking for it, it moves around, and it pulled the bow of his slowly moving boat down into the water.. He said he had the power to pull away but someone in a rowboat would have been in big trouble.. I checked it out in the morning at the right tide as it doesn't last but an hour or less and all I could see was sort of a calm place in the water but I couldn't actually see a hole..
After dinner I got back to my site and a few moments later a car pulled in and two young couples got out and set up a tent next to my site.. I thought that was weird since there were lots of empty sites and most campers always give the others as much room as possible.... So about ten I was ready to climb in the sleeping bag and read a bit but then I realized these kids were getting drunk and the more they drank the louder they got.. I'd doze off for a bit then they'd wake me up again. I knew it would be a waste of time to tell them to pipe down and the office was too far away to hear. Nearly all campers know that after ten there's no noise.
At three AM I heard rain on the tent!!! Normally I would say "#@!!**", but this time I said " thank the lord!!!"... That shut the party down fast and I went to sleep for the first time.. I woke up since the sun was pretty bright and checked the time, 4:30!!!! I always awaken about 5:30 but it was light there due the far eastern location and they said the sun always comes up around that time...
If that wasn't enough, it had rained really hard and you recall how I was saying I always have everything "ready for rain", well I need to revise that statement.. Nothing was left out but I hadn't checked the way I set the tent up and one side wasn't tight enough thus the water could seep inside the tent... I did a fast look around and nothing looked too bad so I grabbed my pants and when I picked them up they were very heavy, you got it, both legs were soaked!!! My other clothes were out on the bike in the bags so what do you do??? You grit your teeth and pull them on, Mother Nature was saying this isn't a time to hesitate, so I did.... Add to that, it was cold, both the temp and me..
Later... DLD
