From journal:

"Another two day bus ride and a new country. Moyale is not a good start to Kenya. The crossing between the two countries seemed to go smooth enough. This was somewhat aided by my "fixer" Hakim who latched onto me at the bus stop. When everything was finished and I dropped my bag onto the floor of my hotel room, he subtly asked for a tip. I said his tip was criminal exchange rate he had charged me for changing money (no banks open, early bus the next morning). He laughed, completely acknowledging this fact.

This hotel is not quite as bad as it gets, but it's damn well close. Bed bugs abound (I've taken to sleeping with all of my clothes on and in my rain jacket with the hood cinched into a little circle with my nose just sticking out). There are stains everywhere - floor, walls, ceiling, and blood stains on the sheets. The stench is putrid - thank God for sensory exhaustion although if the smell transfers to me, my fellow passengers won't be happy. My window looks directly onto the walkway outside and the curtain doesn't come close to covering it. It like I feel bugs and fleas jumping onto me. I am freaking myself out. The toilets are squat and nasty. I've got a headache. Am I whining enough?

While waiting in the Kenyan visa office I noticed some signs pasted around. One of them said "This office says no to corruption - stop being corrupt!" Smack in the middle of the page is a smiley face. Another has a cartoon of a customs officer and it said "Don't offer me a bribe!"

Fuck, I want out of this place.

I am supposed to be taking a bus to Nairobi tomorrow from here. On good roads, it is about 24 hours. This road has been called the "Worst Road in Africa." I have the unfortunate timing to be doing this during the rainy season. This means the road is far worse than usual. I guess we'll see."
