Although it's four weeks until we leave I thought I'd say a few words about the preparation. This trip has grown from a couple of weeks in the European mainland to a full month so I suppose I have to give a mention to the men we are leaving behind. I'm sure they'll manage without us but it's still great to have their full support. It was actually during a meal in Croatia with my husband that the trip was conceived. I mentioned that I thought my mum would love Croatia but she hates flying. Callum, my husband, said that you could get to most places in Europe by train and maybe we should think about that. I called my mum when I returned home, thinking she may be a bit wary of the idea but her response of "we'll need rucksacks!" allayed my fears. I wouldn't be surprised if she hasn't been packed for the best part of two years. This really is a trip of a lifetime for my mum and I'm determined it'll go well. Things are bound to go wrong but we're both pretty easy going people and should be able to take most things in our stride. Having said that, I've reserved most of the train seats that we have to have i.e. the eastern European ones and the long journeys and I've pre booked hostels and budget hotels. We are splashing out twice. Two nights at the Gellert Hotel in Budapest and 2 BRILLIANT seats four rows from the front to see my favourite opera, Tosca, at the Arena in Verona. Apart from that it's budget all the way. I am starting to get really excited about it now and , quite frankly, my mum is practically apoplectic!
