Once in Suva, I head to the nearest hostel, a place called Colonial Lodge. It seems that this hostel hosts one of the large tour groups every Sunday night and therefore has the rediculous price of $25 per night. Still, I don't feel like walking any further with my bags so I pay it. The place is run by a small family with two children. With at least 25 beds in the downstairs, it amazes me that I am the only person staying that night. I guess the $25 scares away anyone with a choice (i.e. not in a tour).
I spend the late afternoon walking around the main drag of Suva. Around 4 pm I watch the changing of the guard at the presidential palace. I stop by Air NZ to verify my flight times. It seems my final flight has been bumped up 15 minutes...good to know. So many of the Fijians look just alike. At least half of them remind me of someone I've already seen that day. Many of the men wear a skirt-style piece of clothing that always looks a little odd to me. Perhaps its because these guys are huge monsters of men, and they are wearing a skirt. It's a rather odd juxtaposition.
My hostel seems to be in a rather dodgy part of town. The adjacent street I have to walk up seems to have a cluster of locals always hanging around. I'm not sure if they are pimps, drug dealers, or both. In any case, I make sure to be back before dark and spend the rest of the evening reading in my solitude.
