Where I stayed
Back at the Balco again, I set out to get my laundry done. The woman here at the hostel said they offered the service for LM1.50. I figured I'd rather just find a laundry-mat and do it myself. Donning my only clean clothes, shorts and a longsleeve shirt, I headed out. This was a mistake. Starting with the lady here, and continuing with everyone I asked on the street, the landrymat varied in direction, distance, and existence. Once I started getting a consistent "I know of no such thing", I decided to head back
A couple weeks ago, my companion had reserved us tickets to see the Hypogeum, a 5600 year old underground temple built by the same mysterious inhabitants that built all the above ground ones. Tickets must be reserved in advanced because they can take 8 people per hour on the required tour. It is supposedly one of the most fragile finds currently tourable. The entire cave is sealed up and is climactically controlled. It's really amazing to see such an old burial ground. In the deepest part, there are the "seven steps". These are 7 irregularly shaped steps, with the 7th being in a peculiar spot. The reasoning behind the step is so thieves coming in would fall off the last step 2 meters to their death on the sharp rocks below. Remember, it was dark in caves back then.
Off to find dinner. It's difficult for me to buy food in Malta. Most of the stores have obviously raised tourist prices, but I've seen the cheaper places from time to time. Knowing a cheaper place might be around the corner makes it a hard purchase sometimes.
