Late last year I became acquainted with a Kansas City based non-profit named Outreach International. It works to help break the cycle of poverty in several developing nations around the globe. It's president offered me the opportunity to tag along on a week-long work trip to rural areas of the Philippines northeast of Manila. I've had an interest in these types of international efforts since before I began traveling abroad. I hope to "learn about the business" so to speak, and also lend a more immediate hand to my hosts. On with the report... The outbound flights should be an exercise in comfort as I have premium cabin seats as far as HKG and a row to MNL. The hardest part of the journey will be getting up at 4am this morning to catch my first flight out of Kansas City.

I'm now at SFO. I slept most of the flight and we had a beautiful cloudless sunrise cruise over the mountains and the bay as we landed. I bought a pair of those Dr. Scholles insoles to replace my worn out original ones. Admittedly it wasn't the comfort of the old ones as much as their epic stank that convinced me to wear the airport for a new pair. It's always nice when you find an item you expect to cost (and are willing to pay) $50, for only $8. The clerk even let me borrow a sharp pair of Fiskar's scissors to cut then to shape (inside the secure area). I visited the United RCC and the SilverKris lounges; an expected domestic disappointment. Around noon we began boarding and I took my seat, probably the only time I'll ride a long haul in the upper deck of the 747. the lie flat seats were awesome, in-flight entertainment sufficient, food mediocre, and seat-mate informative (works for Apple).

After talking, eating, and watching a couple movies, I sacked out for 7 hours.
