Found it was about as cheap to dive on Koh Tau from Samui without actually going to live on the island, although the boat trip was a lot longer. Diane was interested in some snorkelling and she came initially on 2 trips. However the second trip was to the Anthong National Marine park, and although we didn't check to see if we could visit and land on the islands, where some tour companies let you climb and view the lagoon, we thought the cause was a worthwhile one. Basically the dives were subsidised, or rather we paid the price of one dive, but the second one was an annual event that the dive shop operated to clear up the seabed of debris. As Diane was the only snorkeller, she captured a huge amount of the floating debris, left behind by the plethora of fishing boats who harboured there for lunch or whatever - supposedly they weren't there to fish as it was banned under the terms of the Marine Park status, but we witnessed at least two with their lines out - and the others we saw (around 50) were still not meant to be in the area until the middle of May
The result of the cleanup was that a prize of a day's diving trip was given to whoever collected the most rubbish - that prize was awarded to both Diane and my combined collection, and indeed should just have gone to Diane as she was the only one to fill a bag and submit a second. Still the prize was intended for a diver, so I'm not complaining.
Lets hope that the fisherman in witnessing the activity will feel their consciences suitably pricked to be more responsible with disposal of their rubbish in the future.
But thankyou fishermen for creating the opportunity for us to score a free dive trip!
(Me) - he'll be coming round the mountain ...
