MMM. This place has a lot of everything at cheap affordable prices. Obviously its been a tourist mecca for some time, but the industry has still not fully recovered from the Bali bombings, and it is very nice to not have masses of crowds and competition getting into the better accommodations in the town.

Ubud is the cultural centre of Bali.
Saw a gamelan dance show (traditional dancing based on stories from the Hindu scriptures), with a very trance-like music (repetitious phrases played on an orchestra of something like xylophones) - to my ears, and I'm sure to anyone else's who knows the musician Terry Riley, it was like his Rainbow in Curved Air "Unplugged" !
I walked to an area near the centre of town called the monkey forest sanctuary. You have a small admission charge to pay . I would recommend anyone going there to give the slightly aggressive macau monkeys a wide berth, although I was told that you can "buy" some peace from them if you take in some bananas - which has its downside, as soon as they know you have them you can expect a chase on your hands! (I'm exaggerating a little, most of them are under control with many staff to supervise their behaviour, its just the cheekier ones who have wandered from their main territory close to one of the entrances which had noone supervising the time I went). However you do it, try and get past the monkeys - the old temple inside the grounds is beautifully covered in moss and sits in a lovely setting.
Motorbiked around, looking at one of their volcanoes, some relief rock carvings, excavated temples and cave temples.

Went to Nusa Lembongon island off the SE tip of Bali for what turned out to be some excellent diving. Met a couple who were from England, both very experienced divers, who made for very good company both under the water and on the shore.

Unfortunately going over a pothole on the motorbike caused me to break the screen on my camera, so although it could still take pics, I had no editing or quality control, and much less ability to adjust for underwater shots. I will try to post the best of the bunch here over coming week. Beginning to think that I was never meant to own this model of camera !
