Hamjambo!
It's Saturday afternoon and I'm in the cafe after finishing school for the day, before going home to handwash my clothes, clean my very sandy room and get ready to come back out for the only night of the week on which I don't have to worry about school the following day (though I may be taken to church tomorrow morning!). Last Sunday, after a big night at the local dancehall, a few of us decided to climb one of the little mountains nearby with some of our little brothers and sisters. I took three of my younger brothers Samweli, Daniel and Agostino (George had a football match so couldn't make it). All was fine until we were just about over halfway to the top when the dark clouds above turned into a full storm, soaking us all before we could find cover under trees/rocks to wait out the worst of it. Most of the kids took it pretty well, helped along by our cheerful renditions of childrens songs to keep spirits up! As with most days here, the rain was heavy but relatively short-lived, and we were able to get down without any injuries or tantrums, although cold and wet.
I've been back at school all week (apart from one afternoon I wasn't feeling well, but all ok now) and it's going well while I'm reading and writing, but understanding a local speaking at normal speed it still near impossible, but hopefully that will come... I usually get back home before dinner in the evening and spend some time with the family - playing with the children, teaching a little English, or talking to Mama and Baba trying to work on my Swahili. Dinner is always rice based - every day without exception, along with beans and either spinach or fish. It's not varied but is always very tasty, and I'll need to make sure I get to help out or at least watch the cooks at work a few times before I move out to village and have to cook for myself.
Overall, everything is going very well so far, I'm happy in my homestay family, getting on well at school and making great friends with my fellow volunteers. Hope you're all well too, would love to hear from you. Ninakukosa, dipak More thumbnails ...
